The Beginning of the World’s First Military Submarine
In 1721, Russian carpenter Yefim Nikonov presented Tsar Peter the Great with a design for a wooden, barrel-shaped submarine intended to attack enemy ships underwater. During a trial dive in 1724, the vessel sank, though Nikonov survived. After Peter’s death, the project was abandoned, and Nikonov faded into obscurity. Yet his pioneering effort marked the beginning of submarine warfare, which eventually led to David Bushnell’s “Turtle” becoming the first practical submarine during the American War of Independence in 1775.
